Currently, there are approximately 2.500 centenarians living in the Netherlands. Reaching such a milestone is a wonderful achievement, often not accomplished alone. The people around the centenarian play a significant role in this, and how wonderful is it if, as a child, you can support your parent(s) to enjoy this stage of life as comfortably as possible?
On September 17, Mrs. Potijk-Gerritsen, a proud owner of a Rollz walker, celebrated her 100th birthday. We spoke with her daughter Jannette (72) about the role she plays in supporting her mother at this remarkable age.
“Sometimes I find it difficult to be patient, but then I quickly think: let her do it herself”
Mrs. Potijk has always been very independent and doesn’t feel like she’s 100 years old yet. “Sometimes, it’s hard for me to see my mother wanting to do everything on her own. I feel the urge to take over and do things quickly myself. But then I remind myself: now it’s my time to care for her, and I let her go about her way calmly,” Jannette says.
In recent years, Jannette’s role as a caregiver has become increasingly important. “I always try to encourage her to keep doing things on her own. Only when I see her struggling with something, do I offer a suitable alternative. This helps her maintain as much independence as possible.”
At one point, Jannette noticed her mother was having trouble reading. Though her mother had always loved it, she was reading less and less because the letters had become too small. To help, Jannette bought books with larger print, allowing Mrs. Potijk to once again enjoy her favorite pastime.
When Jannette suggests a solution, her mother often insists it’s unnecessary, citing the expense and saying she manages well enough without it. However, once Mrs. Potijk adjusts, she acknowledges how much easier it makes her life and thanks her daughter. In this way, Jannette also introduced an app (Life Transcribe) that allows her now-deaf mother to communicate with others. Every effort is focused on helping her mother maintain her independence and stay socially connected.
Mrs. Potijk is known as a true ‘golden lady,’ with a lifelong appreciation for beautiful things and a refined taste. This became clear when she decided to purchase a new walker. “All the residents in her senior apartment complex had the same walker, so she often lost track of hers. She then chose a Rollz, a model with a distinctive color. She finds it beautiful, and it stands out much more,” her daughter laughs.
Sometimes she feels lonely, which is understandable as her social circle shrinks
It’s no coincidence that Mrs. Potijk chose a Rollz walker wheelchair combo nine years ago. Having always led an active life, she’s determined to maintain this lifestyle for as long as possible, with her daughter fully supporting her. Jannette frequently takes her mother to a crafting club, giving Mrs. Potijk the opportunity to meet new people and enjoy a pleasant afternoon.
Jannette shares that her mother occasionally feels lonely, which is understandable at 100 years old, as many people in her life have passed away. These moments of sadness often lead to Jannette sitting with her mother to look through photos and reminisce. After shedding a few tears, her mother usually feels better. Though it’s hard for Jannette to witness, she does everything she can to make her mother’s life as joyful as possible, while also recognizing that her own life must go on. “It’s not always easy, but I try my best,” Jannette admits.
Be patient: They took care of you, now it’s your turn to give back
Despite the challenges of aging, Mrs. Potijk’s keen eye for detail and independent spirit have helped her face it with dignity. Her daughter shares valuable advice for others caring for elderly parents: “Be patient. Remember, they once took care of you, and now it’s your turn to care for them. It’s important to allow them to maintain their autonomy and independence for as long as possible.”
Mrs. Potijk celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by her children and grandchildren. As a surprise, Rollz visited her and gifted her accessories for her Rollz walker, ensuring she can continue to enjoy many more active moments.
